7th grade Colts split contests with visiting Crystal City

Following a layoff during the Christmas holidays, the 7th grade Colts returned to the hardwood last Thursday to take on the Javelinas from Crystal City. The Gold Colts won their matchup 31-24 while the Maroon Colts fell 67-36 at Devine High School Gymnasium.
Gold
Leading the way for the Gold team was Riley Gutierrez with 13 points followed closely by Cecilio De La Garza who contributed nine points. Jorge Silva chipped in three points and Deryck Frazier, Caden Mann, and Ty Sadler each had two points.
The Gold led after each quarter taking a 10-9 advantage into the second frame. Devine outscored the Javelinas 10 to 4 in the second quarter to hold a 20-13 lead at the break. Crystal City outscored the Colts in the third 6 to 5 but Devine flipped that point total in the fourth quarter to cruise to the 31-24 victory.
Maroon
The Maroon team met a talented Javelina team in the nightcap. Crystal City hit eight three-pointers in the game to pull away for the 67-36 victory. Although Devine hit seven three-pointers of their own, they simply could not keep the torrid pace set by the Javelinas after Crystal City built a 15-1 first quarter lead.
Pacing the Maroon was Karter Brown who netted 12 points. Karson Ray put in seven points while Ray’Sean Beaver contributed six. Ethan Dye scored four points, Tanner Davis had three, while Mason Saunders and Jackson Hagdorn each made a two-point basket.
Devine showed a lot of heart and competiveness in the second quarter, outscoring Crystal City 17-16 to remain in the ballgame at halftime trailing only 31-18. The Javelinas scored 16 points in the third frame while holding the Colts to only 10 points.
Crystal City did not let up in the fourth quarter putting 20 points on the board and limiting the Colts to only eight in the 67-36 Javelina victory.
