The Devine 7th grade Colt Maroon and Gold basketball teams blasted Pearsall last week in the Devine High School Gymnasium. The Maroon team cruised to a 56-21 victory, while the Gold team slammed the Mavericks 28-8.
Maroon
The Maroon Colts, paced by Christian Beaver’s 20 points, stormed by Pearsall 56-21 with the game going in Devine’s favor wire to wire. The Colts led 13-5 after the first six minutes.
Devine turned on the afterburners in the second quarter outscoring Pearsall 15-0 to bump their lead to 28-5 going into halftime. The Colts took a 46-13 lead into the fourth quarter.
Aside from Beaver’s game-high 20 points, Marco Munos poured in 15 as the only other Colt in double figures. Rowdy Esparza chipped in 8 points, Cole Reyes added 7, Jacob McKee got 4 points, and Sergio DeLeon scored a single basket. Carlos Talamantes and Becker Byrd also contributed in the 35-point victory.
Gold
Jace Martinez and Gavin Sanchez each scored 7 points to lead the Gold team past Pearsall 28-8. Estaban Mendoza tallied 6 points, Jack Rumfield chipped in 4 points, and Larry Martinez and Shawn Lowe each had a single basket. Gage Whitaker, Andres Hernandez, and RJ De La O also performed well in the 20-point win.
Devine left little doubt who the better team was early in the ballgame as they outscored Pearsall 15-2 in the opening frame. The Colts increased their lead to 23-4 at halftime after scoring 8 second quarter points.
Interestingly enough, the 28-8 score at the end of the third quarter also happened to be the game’s final score as neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
