6-year-old hopes a liver donor will come forward soon for her baby sister

Baby Esme needs a partial liver donation from a living donor.

Devine Ciavarra Elementary student Elayna Hernandez, 6 years old, hopes to help her baby sister Esme get the partial liver donation from a living donor. We did a story on Baby Esme a few weeks ago, and several people came forward, but a willing match has not been found. Esme has had a feeding tube inserted in order for her to gain weight quickly, so that she can be ready for surgery soon.
If they are able to find a living organ donor, it will speed up the process significantly says her mother Valerie Ann Garcia, of Devine. Due to the liver’s unique ability to regenerate, the partial livers of both the donor and recipient soon grow into complete organs. After you donate, your liver function returns to normal in two to four weeks, and your liver slowly regrows to nearly its full original volume in about a year.
