Virginio Canales Garza, of La Coste, passed away on January 28, 2020 at the age of 74 years. He was born January 21, 1946 in Weslaco, Texas, the oldest of ten children born to Virginio Garza and Melida Canales Garza.
Virginio was a graduate of John Marshall High School. After graduating from high school he served in the United States Army for four years and also served in Air National Guard. He took criminal justice courses at UT Pan American in Edinburg to fulfill his dream of becoming a peace officer. Virginio became a Texas Peace Officer, with his first position at the Donna, Texas Police Department. He worked at various positions with different agencies before retiring in 2009 as a Medina County Deputy Sheriff.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Mary Olivan Garza; children, Rosalinda G. Rodriguez, Virginio Garza, III (Raquel), Arsenio L. Garza (Judy), Rebecca Stovall (Michael), Ruby Murph (Anthony); stepsons, Dennis Garza (Angela) and Richard Allen Gamez (Bianca); nineteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; siblings, Melida Alvarez, Alvaro Garza (Sylvia), Americo Garza (Yolanda), Maricela Terrazas (Henry), Miroslava Valdez (Mario), Marla Hinojosa (Robert), Aliver Garza and Abel Garza (Priscilla) and parents-in-law, Richard and Dolores Olivan; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Virginio was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Aristeo “Teo” Garza.
Visitation was Tuesday, February 4, 2020 starting at 4:00 pm at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home, with the Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 pm. Mass of the Resurrection will be Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in La Coste, Texas. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Cemetery.
