Virginia Mae Jones Smith

Virginia Mae Jones Smith, formerly of Devine, Texas, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, entered into heaven on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the age of 87 in San Antonio, Texas.
Born on June 16, 1930, in Haskell, Texas to Hardie and Myra (Hadaway) Jones, she grew up in various towns until her high school years where she settled with her family in Santa Rosa, Texas. She graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1946 and received her Associates Degree in Education in 1948 from Edinburg Jr. College in Edinburg, Texas. She was a dedicated teacher and substitute teacher for numerous years. She was also employed with Winn’s Department Store and retired from the Texas Department of Transportation in Devine, Texas, after 16 years of service as a secretary.
Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, infant sister Mersel Sue Jones, first husband Joe Keller, four sisters; LaRue (Jones) Lauderdale, Helen (Jones) Buckner, Ersel (Jones) Spannagel, and Opal (Jones) Mortensen, and three brothers-in-law; Harlan Ontjes, Bill Spannagel, and Clark Ellison.
She is survived by her former husband J.D. Smith, her two sons Larry G. and Janice (Dunn) Smith of Bedias, Texas, and Gary D. and Beverly (Wilson) Smith of Hempstead, Texas, two daughters; Sharie R. (Smith) and Roy Brandt of Boerne, Texas and Mary V. (Smith) and Jerry Moore of Natalia, Texas, four sisters; Harlene (Jones) Ontjes, Leona (Jones) and Robert McLean, Dorothy (Jones) and Richard Bottos, and Helma (Jones) Ellison, one brother Paul Jones, and three brother-in-laws; Harold Lauderdale, Tom Buckner, and Jimmy Mortensen. Virginia had 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren who she loved with her whole being, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was Sunday, January 14, 2018 from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Hurley Funeral Home in Devine, Texas. The funeral was held on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 10:00 am, also at Hurley Funeral Home. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery in Devine, Texas.
Her children wish to acknowledge The Heights on Huebner for the wonderful care provided their mother during her final years.
