In the first Warhorse baseball game of the year, Devine faced SA Lanier in a scrimmage. Led by Coach George Villa and assisted by Heath Poppe and Bart Oropeza, the Warhorses have a full schedule with district starting on March 19th against Carrizo Springs. They will compete in three tournaments including the Cross the Creek Classic February 28 – March 2.
Here is how their first scrimmage went as reported by Coach Villa:
Pitching: Our pitchers were suspect for the most part in this first scrimmage. Gehrig Runyan had a good outing in that he had an 8 pitch inning to start out the game. After that, we hit the 15 pitch count limit we set per pitcher, per inning without recording 3 outs. We have to be more consistent pounding the zone and our strike to ball ratio has to improve if we plan to be a competitive baseball team. Our only other inning besides the first inning where we recorded three outs was the 6th inning which was Truett Barron’s first inning of work. Our staff ended the night with 7 K’s but gave up 11 free passes via the walk and hit batsmen. They threw 61 strikes and 61 balls.
Defense: Our defense was solid. We committed two errors on the night but they weren’t mental. We can live with that and will get better there. We ask them to make the routine play and for the most part, they did.
At the plate: I thought we did good at the plate as a whole. There are a few that still need a little work, but for the most part, we barreled the baseball pretty good for our first scrimmage. We were able to manufacture some runs by moving guys over via the bunt and stealing.
Base running: There are lots of things that we can get better at on the base paths. So this week, we will take the time to work on those things to get better.
