Two lose lives in horrible accident on I-35 near Devine

Brian Betancourt
Vanessa Villesca

A young man and woman lost their lives in a tragic accident on I-35 this past week on January 19. The accident occurred around 3:14 am near Mile Marker 119. After hitting the cable barrier, their vehicle reportedly rolled into oncoming traffic on I-35 north.
A DPS report states, “A 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Brian Betancourt, 28, and occupied by Vanessa Villesca, 29, was traveling southbound on IH-35. For reasons not yet known, Mr. Betancourt lost control of his vehicle, which then veered across the center median and into the northbound lanes. The Tahoe struck a 2014 Kia Optima, occupied by an adult female and adult male.”
Emergency responders worked hard to get Ms. Villesca out of the vehicle, but unfortunately she and Mr. Betancourt also passed away at the scene. They were both from Pearsall.
“The occupants of the Kia were transported to University Hospital in San Antonio for treatment. The investigation is ongoing and all contributing factors are not yet known. DPS would like to remind all drivers to minimize distractions, don’t exceed the speed limit, obey traffic control devices and always wear your safety belt. The completed crash report can be obtained for a fee at https://www.texas.gov/ once the investigation has concluded.”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved in this truly tragic accident. Brian was “a great friend, brother, and son.” Family and friends added, “If you were feeling down he would always be there to make you feel better….He had a big heart for everyone….and was a true friend to everyone.”
Vanessa, a young mother, is survived by three children and described by family and friends as “a beautiful soul” who “touched many hearts and lives here on earth and will be missed tremendously.”
