Many hearts are aching after a local man, Hector Gonzales of Devine, and a friend Jacob Morris of LaVernia, who were involved in a tragic double fatality this past Friday, October 8th. The motorcycle accident happened around 6 in the evening near LaVernia on FM 306, claiming the lives of these two young men much too soon.
DPS reports stated that the two young men lost control of their motorcycles while going around a curve. “Mr. Morris slid off the roadway and struck a tree. Mr. Gonzales slid into oncoming traffic in the westbound lane. Mr. Morris and Mr. Gonzales were sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of a pickup truck that was traveling in the westbound lane was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing and all contributing factors are not yet known.”
The two young men will certainly be missed and their families are in all of our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Hector and Jacob were both described by many as guys “who would give you the shirt off their back,” and the outpouring of love from both communities shows the impact these two young men have made.
“Hector was always there, in every way, for anyone in need. He was the greatest man anyone could have the absolute pleasure of knowing,” said his brother Mark Pena.
“Hector was an honest guy that would be there whenever you called. He loved his mom, who was his #1. He enjoyed life and having fun,” close friends said.
“If you were friends with Hector, or even an acquaintance, you knew he would give you the shirt off his back, if you needed it,” said friend Oliver Lewis. “He would help you without hesitation and expect nothing in return. You have touched so many lives in such a short time.”
Friends set up a fundraiser on Go Fund Me for Hector to help family with the expense of arrangements for his unexpected passing. You can find a link on organizer Oliver Lewis’ Facebook page.
His good friend, Jacob Morris of LaVernia, leaves behind a loving wife and one year old daughter.
“Most everyone knew Jacob to be outgoing, kind hearted, a loving friend, father, husband, son, grandson, uncle and brother,” said his sister Bailey Eldred. “He never knew a stranger and always left a lasting impression. He brought light and laughter wherever he was, your shoulder to cry on, someone to vent to, and always down to have a good time. He was definitely one in a million and he will be deeply missed and loved.
Family created a Go Fund Me for Jacob as well, stating “anything will help with funeral expenses, house payments, truck payments and more. Shannon is a stay at home mom and student. This was a very sudden tragedy, anything will help whether it be helping pick up groceries, mow the yard, or just say a prayer.”
The fundraiser for Morris can be found on his sister’s Bailey Eldred’s Facebook page.
