Sophie Elaine Delaney, of Atascosa, Texas, has embarked on her final journey at the age of 88. Sophie was born on July 17, 1935, in the serene town of Kerrville, Texas. She peacefully passed away on December 16, 2023, in Lytle, Texas. As we bid her farewell, let us celebrate the life she lived and the profound impact she had on those around her.


Sophie dedicated an impressive 25 years of her life to serving the community as a mail carrier at the Atascosa Post Office in Atascosa, Texas. Her commitment to her work was unparalleled, and she brightened every recipient’s day with her warm smile and friendly demeanor. Sophie’s dedication was legendary, and she touched countless lives through her service. In addition to her service to the Atascosa Post Office, Sophie was a committed member of The Ladies Auxiliary since 1970 and a member of Somerset Baptist Church in Somerset, Texas.
More than just a mail carrier, Sophie was a vibrant individual who left an indelible mark on everyone she met. She possessed a sassy and spunky personality that infused laughter into every situation. Her infectious sense of humor brought joy to both her colleagues and recipients of her deliveries alike.
Loved ones will fondly remember Sophie as a caring individual who always went above and beyond for others. Her heart overflowed with love and compassion for both friends and strangers alike. Whether it was taking time out of her busy schedule to lend a helping hand or offering words of solace during difficult times, Sophie’s unwavering support made a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Born Sophie Elaine Bernhardt to Mary and Arno Bernhardt in Kerrville, Texas, Sophie grew up alongside six siblings: Mary Ann, Sue, Dottie, Betty Jo, Bertha Lee, and Arno Bernhardt Jr., she cherished the memories they shared throughout their lives and held them close to her heart.
Sophie shared a beautiful journey with James David “J.D.” Delaney, Jr., her beloved, husband of 53 years, who preceded her in death. The love they shared was the stuff of fairy tales, inspiring those around them with their unwavering devotion. They created a home filled with laughter, joy, and a profound sense of togetherness.
In addition to her husband, Sophie leaves behind a legacy through her surviving family and friends. Children, Elaine Turnbow and her husband, Gary, Jim Delaney and his wife, Donna, Robert Delaney and his significant other, Mary Esther; Grandchildren, J.D. Oliver and his wife, Courtney, Janette Williams, E.J. Adams and her husband, Derrick, John Delaney, Robert Delaney Jr., and his wife, Rose, Tara Wyrwich and her husband, Troy; were all fortunate to have been touched by her love.
Sophie took great pride in being a grandmother to 12 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She delighted in watching each of them grow into remarkable individuals. Their milestones brought immeasurable joy to Sophie’s life, reminding her of the lasting impact she had on future generations.
Her loss is deeply felt by family and friends who were fortunate enough to know her incredible spirit.
While we mourn the loss of a remarkable woman today, let us also celebrate the incredible life that Sophie Elaine Delaney lived. Her infectious laughter, loving nature, and vivacious spirit will forever remain etched in our hearts. As we say goodbye to our dear friend one final time, let us honor her memory by carrying forward the values she held close: kindness towards others and an unwavering commitment to making the world a brighter place.

A Visitation will be held Wednesday, December, 20, 2023 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, at Primrose Funeral Services, Chapel, at 14822 Main Street, Lytle, TX 78052, with a Funeral Service to follow at 11:00 am.
Interment will be at San Fernando III Cemetery, 1735 Cupples Rd, San Antonio, TX 78226.
