San Antonio Food Bank satellite opens in Pearsall

Recently the San Antonio Food Bank opened a unit in Pearsall to better serve the south Texas area. It is located at 1203 S. Oak Street and is currently open from 8 a.m. until noon. Starting the second week of October, the hours will change to 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The location offers assistance with needed food items, and applications for assistance for a number of social services.
Client Services Specialist Ezra Ortiz is leading the way there and currently spends his afternoons traveling around the area to get the word out on the agency’s available services.
“We are bi-lingual and we will be happy to help anyone who comes to us,” he said. “Some people may not want to go into San Antonio or be able to get there. Getting to Pearsall may be easier for them.”
The services Ortiz will assist on applications include SNAP & TANF, CHIP, CHIP Perinatal & Medicaid, Medicare Savings Program and Healthy Texas Women Program.
And, of course, numerous items of food are available at any time the office is open with no paperwork involved.
“If you come and ask for it, we’ll give it to you,” Ortiz said.
The fourth Wednesday of each month will be Senior Citizens day. Any senior who comes by that day can receive a box of groceries “and cheese.”
If you call the office for more information at 830-334-1778, you won’t be greeted by a recording but a real person. So, if you have questions, please call, or if you have access to a computer you can find more information at www.safoodbank.org.
Their stated mission is “To fight hunger in Southwest Texas through food distribution, programs, education, and advocacy.”
