Roger Lewis Schott of Pleasanton, Texas entered eternal rest on January 30, 2022. He was born in Devine, TX on November 13, 1941, the youngest of seven children of George Lewis Schott and Helen Neatherlin Schott. He was 80 years old, and his “Schott” wit and sense of humor were ever-present.
Roger graduated from Devine High School in 1960. He then attended Navarro Junior College in Corsicana on a football scholarship where he won the Daiches Trophy as the Most Outstanding Lineman in 1961. He later graduated from Lamar State University in Beaumont, Texas, where he also received a football scholarship.
Roger married Jeanne Marie Pope in Houston, Texas in 1966. Their 35-year marriage blessed them with three children – Glenn Allen, Dale Lewis, and Kay Lynn.
Roger’s first career was as a well-loved and respected teacher/coach. He taught biology and health courses while coaching high school football, basketball, and track in Somerset and then Pleasanton. He was also a beloved driver’s education instructor and bus driver for both districts. In 1994 Somerset High School named him an Outstanding Ex-Teacher Honoree.
After 16 years of coaching and teaching, he began his second career as a control room operator for 27 years at the San Miguel Power Plant in Christine, Texas, where he was well-known for making a mean Menudo.
Roger was strong, reliable, humble, and loyal with a dry sense of humor. He enjoyed fishing and tennis. He was also an excellent gardener, handyman and was always just a phone call away when someone needed help. In his lifetime, Roger was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Devine and St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Pleasanton.
Survivors include children, Glenn Schott of Las Vegas, Dale Schott (Mysti) of San Antonio, and Kay (Craig) Russell of San Antonio; four grandchildren, Raegen, Avarie, Harrison, and Nicholas; a sister Joyce Rihn; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
