Devine senior Dillon Ricord has been recognized by the San Antonio Express-News as its Athlete of the Week. Dillon earned five gold medals at the District 29-4A meet accounting for 45 of the Warhorses District Championship 183-point total. Ricord won the long jump (20’1¼”), triple jump (40’3½”), 100m dash (11.09), and the 200m dash (22.29). He also anchored Devine’s winning 4x200m relay (1:31.96). Not only did Ricord take home the gold in each of those five events in the District Meet, he has also won the 100m dash, 200m dash, and the long jump in each of the meets in which he has participated during the season.
“It takes a special kind of athlete to not only juggle two sports at one time but to excel in both is a testament to what kind of athlete Dillon is,” Head Track Coordinator Lynn Cozby said referring to Ricord concurrently participating in baseball and track. “Here’s a guy that is a two-time Track State Qualifier and is currently ranked high in both the 100m dash and 200m dash going into the Area Meet. Scoring 45 points in a meet is unheard of and not losing in the three mentioned events all season is really remarkable.”
In regards to Dillon’s Athlete of the Week award, Ricord stated, “I take it as a great achievement and a nice accomplishment that I can always remember. Doing track and baseball takes up a great amount of time which sometimes makes me tired both physically and mentally. The adrenaline that goes through me when the gun is about to go off to start a race gets me pumped up and I forget about being tired.”
