Elementary level classroom and office space is among the most pressing needs for the Natalia school district listed in a proposed $22.6 million bond program presented by Superintendent Lana Collavo at the Jan. 22 board of trustees meeting.

Msgt. Valdemar “Jerry” Castillo Jaramillo

August 24, 1934 – January 8, 2024

We are sad to announce the passing of our beloved father (retired) MSGT Valdemar “Jerry” Castillo Jaramillo. Dad went to be with our Lord on January 8, 2024, at the age of 89 years old. He was born in Devine, Texas, the son of Francisco Del-Puig Jaramillo and Angelita Castillo Jaramillo. Valdemar was married to Gloria Medina Jaramillo for 37 years and had three children, Valdemar Castillo Jaramillo, Jr., Jesse Edward Jaramillo, and Diane Jaramillo Juarez. Valdemar remarried on September 2, 1997, to Gloria Chapa Kaiser from Devine, Texas, they were married for 27 years.

Lawrence R. (Ralph) Rogers

Lawrence R. (Ralph) Rogers, 79, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2024, in Menard, Texas.
Lawrence was born in San Antonio to Walter and Helen (Bush) Rogers on August 13, 1944.
He attended school in Devine and graduated in 1962. He was an accomplished athlete and was known for his quickness and speed which would earn him a basketball scholarship to Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Council orders appraisal of Devine airport, discusses possible sale

(Note: Mayor Cook, nor Council members Pyron, Hernandez, or Ritchey were on council when the purchase of the airport hangars was approved by the city council in 2022. In fact, at that time, as a citizen Ritchey spoke up against the idea of spending that million on the airport, prior to being a councilman.

The only council members who were part of that decision to purchase hangars in 2022, and are still currently serving are Randall and Vega. At that time, it was stated that TxDot/ FAA was threatening to take back airport grants, so the council acted quickly to purchase the hangars to get the situation under control. Yet, still to this day, no proof has ever been produced of those supposed TxDot or FAA threats.)

In a major move and interesting turn of events, the Devine city council voted 5-0 to authorize obtaining an appraisal of the property and discussed the possibility of selling the airport.
