She taught school in New Hampshire previous to moving to Venezuela where she also taught school. Later on, she moved to a position at The Royal Bank of Canada. During her time in Venezuela, she met John Farley at a beer bust. They fell in love and she moved to San Antonio, where they were married on February 9, 1959. They then moved to their ranch in D’Hanis, Texas where they raised cattle. She loved to ride horses and motorcycles and they took many trips on their motorcycles to Big Bend, New Mexico and Colorado. Mary and John also took flying lessons and went backpacking to various places.
