Upon receiving the award, Lowe Jr. stated, “It is an honor and privilege to accept this award on behalf of our family and over 5200 great employee teammates.” The Institute for Family Business at Baylor University has sponsored this annual awards program since 1989. The Texas Family Business of the Year Awards Program recognizes multi-generational, family-owned firms whose families demonstrate a commitment to each other, to their employees, to the community and to business continuity. The event draws hundreds of family business owners annually to the Baylor campus. Entries are judged on a number of criteria including family involvement, community & industry involvement, business success, and succession planning. Businesses are divided into three general size categories: Large (more than 151 employees), Medium (51-150 employees), and Small (50 or fewer employees). Lowe’s Market is a family owned and Christian-based supermarket chain that operates under numerous banners throughout the Southwest United States. The Lowe family is proud of their Texas roots and has always based their operations in the Lowe’s family hometown of Littlefield, Texas. Lowe’s opened its first grocery store in the small town of Olton Texas in 1964; however, the family history in the business can be traced back to the late 1940’s when E.M. (Bud) Lowe started selling candy and sundries in Littlefield. Bud and his son, Roger Sr., founded the company on the principle of taking care of the community, their teammates, and their family. That philosophy has allowed the company to grow from its humble beginnings to 152 stores covering the entire state of Texas and New Mexico, with additional locations in Colorado, Kansas and Arizona. The Lowe family of supermarkets operate under various banners to meet the diverse needs of their customers including Lowe’s, Lowe’s Market, Ace Hardware, Big 8 Food Store, Food King (Cost Plus Foods), Lowe’s Family Center, Fiesta Foods, La Feria, Lowe’s Super Save, Lowe’s Subway, Lowe’s Mercado, Lowe’s Avanza, Lowe’s Shop n’ Save, and Lowe’s Corner Market. Their different banners help to match the diverse customer base because the family business strives to give each customer exactly what they want. Lowe’s Market is honored to receive this award and will continue striving for success in all of its future endeavors.
