On Wednesday, April 10 just before 7AM, a fatal crash occurred on State Hwy173 at the entrance to the Martin Marietta quarry about 9 miles north of Hondo. Sadly, 66-year-old Alfred R Alejandro, of San Antonio, lost his life in the accident when two truck and trailers collided.
According to DPS, “A truck with a loaded gravel trailer was turning out of the quarry, entering SH-173 when another truck with a loaded gravel trailer was attempting to pass another vehicle on SH-173 headed north. The northbound truck and trailer struck the exiting truck and trailer. The impact caused the northbound trailer to slam into the truck, crushing the cab and killing the driver.”
A gravel trailer is rated for 70,000 pounds.
Hondo Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene as they were needed to extricate the driver.
The investigation is ongoing, and all contributing factors are currently unknown. The Texas Department of Public Safety would like to remind all drivers to control your speed, minimize distractions, and obey traffic control devices.
