JV Warhorses go 1-1 in District tournament

In the JV District tournament, the JV Warhorses went 1-1 last Thursday. Playing in Hondo, the Warhorses faced Pearsall first and fell short at 6-4. This was the JV Warhorses second loss of the season and they turned it around to beat Crystal City 8-3.
They only had 4 hits in the Pearsall game but just a single reported error. In the bottom of the second inning, Evan Priest hit a double to left and then made it home when Kannon Ramirez hit a line drive to center. Bottom of the third with two outs, Justin Contreras scored on a wild pitch. Bottom of the fourth, with K. Ramirez on third and Brady Hackebeil on second Xsavior hit a triple to right to bring home both Warhorses. The game ended after the fourth 6-4.
Hackebeil 1 run, 1 hit. Martinez 1 hit, 2 RBIs. Contreras 1 run, 1 hit. Priest 1 run, 1 hit. K. Ramirez 1 run. Pitchers Robert Ramirez 14 strikes in 26 pitches, Contreras 1 strikes in 9 pitches, Priest 23 strikes in 42 pitches.
In their second game of the day, the Warhorses came from behind in the third to beat Crystal City 8-3. Down 3-1, Mando Gutierrez walked and then Hackebeil singled on a line drive. With Martinez at bat, Gutierrez stole third. Martinez would bunt and Gutierrez would score. Hackebeil scored the tying run on an error by the pitcher. Martinez would score on a passed ball and Christian Gerlach walked. He then stole second and made it to third on the catcher’s error. Jacob Barron would walk. Gerlach scored on another wild pitch and Barron advanced from first to third. Mason Burford ground out allowing Barron to score. 2 outs, Priest was hit by a pitch and sent to first, Sage Cruz came into run for Priest and stole second while Zack Alvarez was at bat. Alvarez hit a single to short and Cruz made it to third. Cruz then scored on a wild pitch. M. Gutierrez walked and then with Hackebeil at bat, Alvarez scored on a passed ball, Hackebeil struck out swinging for the final out. Crystal City was unable to score in the bottom of the inning and Devine won 8-3.
Hackebeil 1 run, 1 hit. Martinez 1 run, 1 hit, 1 RBI. Gerlach 2 runs, 1 hit. Barron 1 run. Burford 1 RBI. Priest 1 hit, 1 RBI. Cruz 1 run. Alvarez 1 run, 1 hit. M. Gutierrez 1 run.
“I believe that our kids are competing well and it’s always good to have a winning record heading into district play. The boys will continue to play hard and we will to continue to improve as team,” stated Coach Bart Oropeza.
The JV Warhorses started their district play last night against Carrizo Spring and they will play Crystal City away Friday night. They ended pre-season 9-2.
