JV Horses trounce YMLA 30-8

The Devine JV Warhorses lit up the Lions for 30 points in their 22-point victory Thursday evening on the neighborhood field next to the YMLA school buildings.
“We scored a lot of points but I feel we didn’t play very well offensively,” Poppe stated early on about some inconsistencies in his squads assignments. “We missed quite a few blocking assignments and missed the running lane a few times, but I do realize that part of the problem was YMLA misaligning quite a bit which caused us some confusion.”
Evan Sanchez began the scoring onslaught with a 20-yard run to end the Horses first drive. Wero Torres converted the two-point run giving Devine an 8-0 lead.
Devine quarterback Jonathan Weinkam hit Sanchez for a scoring strike later in the first quarter, boosting their lead to 16-0 after Eli Contreras ran in the conversion.
The Horses recovered their ensuing onside kick to keep possession. Weinkam completed a 31-yard pass to Trinidad Hernandez to give the Horses a 22-0 lead going into the break.
The Horses scored twice more in the third quarter on a Jose Moralez 20-yard burst and a Gabriel Lopez 3-yard run. Weinkam ran in for two-points after the Moralez touchdown.
A shutout by the Horses was all but guaranteed with their stellar defensive play. However, the Lions scored on an 80-yard kickoff return following Devine’s last score of the ballgame.
The JV ‘D’ had another good week,” said defensive signal caller Evan Eads. “No touchdown given up, as the only one they got was against our special teams. All know their assignments, and everyone is playing aggressively. We will need to continue to improve on finishing tackles if we are going to win week to week.”
Devine is now 3-0 on the season with a home game against Pleasanton Thursday.
“Our big test of the season to this point will come next week against Pleasanton,” Poppe said about the upcoming Eagles tilt. “Pleasanton is always fundamentally sound and we must have our best week of practice. We must be flawless both in our blocking and running lanes if we wish to continue our offensive success against a formidable opponent.”
