Jr. High Lady Pirates take on Cowgirls

The Junior High Lytle Pirates traveled to Cotulla on Wednesday, Jan. 19. The game was scheduled for Thursday but with possible icy roads it was moved up for safety reasons. Pirates got on the board in the first 2 minutes of the game and ended the 1st quarter 6-0 against the Cowgirls with points from #1 Mendoza, #2 Muraira (each with 1 free throw), #14 Villarreal and Sewell (2 points each). Heading into the half, the Cowgirls had a couple of fast breaks that the Pirates couldn’t stop, putting the Pirates down by 2 into the half 10-12.
The Lytle Pirates played strong zone defense but couldn’t make contact with the basket, finished the 3rd quarter with only a 3 pointer from #2 Muraira. The Pirates were behind 13-19.
Heading into the 4th and once again #2 Muraira (10 points in the 4th) and #52 McDonald (1 free throw) with a hot streak inching our way back to recover the lead, but the Pirates just ran out of time, losing to the Cowgirls with a final score of 24-29.
The Pirates displayed great teamwork and determination. We are very proud of these young ladies; they have come a long way considering more than half the team being new to the program. Great things are coming to Lytle athletics!
