Hazmat spill: fuel tanker flips after swerving to save woman’s life

Medina County–A trucker hauling several thousand gallons of fuel was traveling west on Hwy 90 last Tuesday, February 25, when he collided with a vehicle near Dunlay. First responders report that he swerved to the left in an attempt to miss the vehicle which was pulling out onto the highway in front of him, a quick action that most likely saved the woman’s life.
According to first responders, while that action did most likely save the woman’s life, the two vehicles still collided as the large fuel tanker clipped the front left side of the vehicle. Then as the trucker tried to come back onto the roadway to avoid the cable barrier, he lost control of the truck and flipped over in the north shoulder.
According to reports, several hundred gallons of red diesel fuel spilled into the median where the truck turned over. The woman was transported to University Hospital by ambulance.
The diesel spill is considered a hazmat spill, and hazmat crews were still out there for many hours cleaning up contaminated dirt.
