DHS tennis competes in Uvalde’s Small But Mighty Tournament

The Devine Tennis Team won place at the Annual Small But Mighty Tennis Tournament in Uvalde this past weekend. Our kids did a great job winning several medals again.
Among the Arabians to medal were Girl’s Doubles team Lydia Zapata and Scarlett Smith. They beat Sifuentes/Perez from Carrizo Spring 6-2,6-4, Hernandez/Alvarado from Carrizo Springs 6-3,6-0 and Carrasco/Carrasco from Poteet 6-0,6-0. Zapata/Smith lost to the Ingram duo of Chernal/Bowan 3-6,2-6 and had to settle for 2nd place in Girl’s Doubles.
Abbie Capps won second place in Girl’s Singles. Capps beat H. Sutherland from Bandera 6-0,6-1, H. Jones from Hondo 6-0, 6-2 and D. Rodriguez from Uvalde 7-6(8-6), 6-0. Capps was unable to return Saturday morning and defaulted her championship match to take 2ndplace .
Lindsey Spannagel won a 3rd place medal in Girl’s Singles. Spannagel beat S. Hecker from Medina Valley 7-5,6-3, L. Mancha from Poteet, 7-5,6-3 before losing to Sabinal’s B. Sanchez in split sets, 0-6,6-2 with a close tie breaker of 8-10. Spannagel then beat D. Rodriguez from Uvalde in two sets, 6-1,6-0 to win 3rd place.
Warhorses earning medals were Singles Jaime Garza and Tristan Woods, and the Doubles team of Toby Ramos and Jake Harrell.
Ramos/Harrell drew a bye in the first round, then beat a tough Ingram team of Perez/Soto in a tie breaker for the set, 4-6,6-4,10-7. The Hondo pair of McGuire/Twilligear beat the Devine duo in a another tie breaker for the match 1-6,6-3,8-10. Their next opponent did not return Saturday morning so they won 3rd place by default.
Tristan Woods beat Uvalde’s J. Guillen 6-4,6-3, R. Agulta from Ingram 6-3,6-0, and D. Keller from Medina Valley 6-1,6-3. Woods lost a very tough finals match to A. Pargas of Hondo 4-6,6-4,1-10, earning a 2nd place medal in Boys Singles #2.
Jaime Garza also came home with a 2nd place medal in his Singles #1 bracket. Garza beat D. Esqivel from Knippa 6-2,6-0, J. Gomez from Uvalde, 7-5, 7-5 and J. Pawlik from Pearsall 6-2,6-3. Garza had a tough final match losing to Hondo’s D. DeLeon 2-6,3-6 giving him 2nd place.
I am very proud of this tennis family. They are an exceptional group of young gentlemen and ladies. We always get compliments on their good behavior and sportsmanship, win or lose. They work hard in practice so it shows in the tournaments.
