It was a beautiful Devine Monday morning at the VFW when a group of volunteers charged with coffee from Nellie Ruth’s stood ready to distribute food from the San Antonio Food Bank in a drive-thru style operation. Cars were parked down College Ave and wrapped around Upson St waiting for the 9:30 am start. Sylvia Hawkins moved hurriedly from car to car verifying families that pre-registered and signing up on stand-by all those that weren’t. In less than 90 minutes, all the food was in the hands of families and those volunteers were busy cleaning up. “These are the most satisfying events for the VFW because we get to serve the community that supports us,” commented Jesse Rodriguez, Devine Post 3966 Commander.
Briana Fabela, SA Food Bank Market Coordinator for Pop Up Distributions said, “We did really well today and served around 250 families in about 90 minutes. We were able to distribute all the food we brought. Best of all, we provided a lot of fresh produce which families don’t always get. The VFW is a great partner and along with Devine ISD, the San Antonio Food Bank will be able to distribute in Devine about every two weeks.”
This was the first of many food distributions and to say it was a success is an understatement. The VFW and Food Bank wants to do better though and hopes to serve closer to 300 families at the next event on September 13th. Those families needing assistance can pre-register to ensure food availability through the Devine VFW’s website at https://vfw3966.org, click NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS for the signup link.
