Devine Middle School Colts and Fillys ran their first meet of the season in Bandera this past Saturday. Tanner Davis led the 7th grade Colts with an individual first place finish and a time of 10:03. Eighth grade Colt Taylor Hurst medaled at 15th place and a time of 12:10.
Leading the way for the Fillys was 8th grader Airyanna Rodrigues who placed 5th with a time of 11:26. She was closely followed by Kourtni Geyer who came in 9th with a time of 11:47.
“I thought our first meet went well,” said Coach Mark Mangold. “Runners came home with a new sense of importance. This meet was a nice reward for a couple of weeks of hard work.”
Nestea plunge
Today’s generation is a lil’ too young to know exactly what the “Nestea Plunge” was back in the day. In short, once a person would take a drink of Nestea, they would begin to feel a new reality, a new sense of energy, and it would create a desire for some fun-filled activities.
Maybe, just maybe, Tanner and the rest of the runners had a little extra motivation to do well Saturday as Coach Mangold made a side-promise to his runners before they toed-the-line to run their two-mile race.
“I told everyone that if anyone won 1st in their race I would jump in the river,” Mangold said about getting his squad pumped. “Tanner Davis won his race so I lived up to my promise and when everything was over; I went down to the river and took the plunge. Everyone around was laughing and cheering. Next time I think —- I’d do it again!”
