Devine City Council, School Board seats up for election

The General Election will be held on May 4, 2024 at Devine City Hall.
Candidates could have started filing for office on January 29. The deadline to file is Friday, February 16, 2024. All three incumbents have picked up packets so far.


Stop by the City of Devine office if you are interested in learning more about becoming a council member and pick up a packet.
Districts 1, 3 and 4 have council people with expiring terms. They are:

Entered office 05/16/2023 (remainder of David Espinosa’s term) – Term expires May, 2024

Non-expiring offices currently serving are: Mayor Butch Cook, Debbie Randall, and Michael Hernandez.
The City of Devine is a General Law A Municipality with Government of a Mayor and Five Councilmen and/or Councilwomen. Council meetings are the third Tuesday of every month.

Devine ISD Board, filing deadline is Feb. 16
The Devine ISD will host an annual election on May 4, 2024 for expiring board of trustee positions. This year there are two expiring seats that of District 5 Trustee Keri James and District 1 Trustee Ali Buvinghausen.
Keri James has turned in her packet and re-filed for office.
To vote in a district 5 or 2 you must reside in that district. But to run for a district you do not.
Filing began in January as usual and the deadline to file is Friday, February 16, 2024.
The board meets regularly the 3rd Monday of each month.
Board members currently serving the Devine ISD are:Nancy Pepper, President, 16 years; Henry Moreno, Vice-President, 16 years; Keri James, Secretary, 6 years; Carl Brown, 18 years; Chris Davis, 5 years; Renee Frieda, 5 years; and Ali Buvinghausen, 3 years.
Devine ISD holds school board elections every year on the May uniform election date which is the first Saturday in May. The next election will be held on May 4, 2024.  Elections are generally held jointly with the City of Devine at City Hall unless the City cancels its election in which case Medina County will conduct our election at the County Annex Building or the Community Center.
Anyone wishing to run for school board may submit their application for a place on the ballot at the Devine ISD Administration Building at 605 W. Hondo Ave. The first day to file an application for a place on the ballot is the 30th day before the filing deadline which will be January 17, 2024. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on the 78th day before election day which will be February 16, 2024. The deadline to file a declaration of write-in candidacy is 5 p.m. on the 74th day before election day which will be February 20, 2024.
