Devine athletes begin workouts June 8

As Devine athletes begin workouts in person next Monday, June 8, Athletic Director Chad Quisenberry is asking everyone to do their part to follow the rules, and emphasizes that he doesn’t want parents or athletes to feel pressured to attend. But they are very excited to see the kiddos for those that do feel comfortable.

“We know some of our players and staff have family members with underlying conditions, and that they need to be more careful. I know something like 45% of people with COVID didn’t even know they had it, and that’s scary. I don’t want to pass it to anybody,” Quisenberry stated.

“I am that guy still wearing a mask when I walk into Walmart. We just don’t know that much about this illness. We aren’t taking it lightly,” he adds. “We are going to do this, but we are going to do it right. We are going to take every precaution we can. We have purchased thermometers and will be taking temperatures every day.”

“If parents aren’t comfortable sending kids to the Strength and Training camps we are okay with that. We understand. We can send the workouts through Google Classroom. UIL said we can start training, so we are going to offer it, but WE DO NOT WANT ANYONE TO FEEL PRESSURED TO ATTEND. We are all excited to see our kids again, and look forward to working with them, but safety is still our #1 priority. We want everyone to do what’s best for their families.”

“If you have a fever over 99, please stay home. Safety is our #1 priority. This is huge for us, to prove that can do this safely. It is crucial that everyone follows the rules and we get it right. If we start having outbreaks of COVID, that’s is going to be a huge deterrent for us getting to compete in the Fall. If you want to be able to play football, volleyball, cross country, or tennis in the Fall, we have to get to get this right and do our part to prevent spread of COVID-19,” Quisenberry said.

In a letter to parents and athletes, Quisenberry stated, “We will expect staff and athletes to conduct themselves as if they are contagious. The policies in our plan are designed to minimize risk for yourself and others. It is vital to the health and safety of everyone that our athletes and staff are fully conscious of this at all times and take responsibility of following these guidelines seriously.”

The letter also states that all Athletes and Staff will be screened and have their temperature taken as soon as they arrive.  Athletes and staff will be sent home if they answered “YES” to any screening questions or if they do not feel well.
