Current Events Club Hosts DHS Class of 2021 Ice Cream Social

On April 12, the Devine High School Senior Class of 2021 attended their first senior party at the home of George and Martha Wall. Hosted by the Current Events Club to honor graduating seniors, ice cream floats and cookies were served, a variety of yard games and other activities were provided, and time of fellowship was enjoyed before Principal Derrick Byrd introduced attending seniors to club members. Gift cards to local businesses were drawn throughout the afternoon, and each student left with a souvenir Warhorse and Arabian cup and napkin for their memory books.
Special guests included DISD administrators, school board members, and high school faculty, as well as First Baptist Church pastor Dan Newburg. More than sixty seniors attended on a warm and beautiful April afternoon. This event is a tradition which began more than sixty years ago and has changed from a Senior Girls’ Tea to the current backyard affair. Last year’s party was cancelled due to COVID, but the club still honored the class of 2020 with a note of congratulations and local gift card. Honoring Devine High School Seniors is one of several club projects supporting our local schools and young people. Also upcoming is presenting two $1000 scholarships at the Scholarship Program to be held in May.

The club would like to thank Devine’s Dairy Queen, Sonic, First United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, and DISD’s Transportation and Maintenance departments for helping with details that make the event a success. We enjoy celebrating the accomplishments of our young people, and your help makes it possible.
The Club’s final meeting of the ’20-’21 year will be held on Tuesday, May 11, at 3:30, at Sarah McAlpin’s. Officers for the ’21-’22 year will be installed, and members are asked to bring a favorite dish for a light supper. If you are woman from the Medina County area who isinterested in becoming part of a service club, contact President Linda Kreinhop or Martha Wall, or any member of this civic organization.
