City of Devine proposes small tax increase

The average property tax bill for homesteaded properties in the City of Devine looks to rise $35.00 under the Devine City Council’s proposed 2020 tax rate of $0.5298 per $100 of valuation.
A final public hearing on and adoption of the tax rate is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29 at 6:00 pm at the George S. Woods Community Center in Devine.
Though the proposed tax rate is the same as the 2019 rate, the average tax bill will increase thanks to a 6.55 percent increase in taxable value.
In order to keep taxes at the 2019 level, Council would have to lower the tax rate to $0.5141.
District 1 Councilman Rufino Vega, District 2 Councilman Steve Lopez, District 3 Councilman David Espinosa, District 4 Councilman Chuck Guzman, and District 5 Councilwoman Debra Randall all approved the proposed tax rate.
The tax rate and budget for the upcoming fiscal year must be adopted no later than Sept. 30.
