Varsity Boys Basketball vs. Lytle – 1/23/2024
It was standing room only at Natalia High School on Tuesday night as the Lytle Pirates came to town to battle the Mustangs. The Pirates came into the game with a 2-1 District 28-3A record and the Mustangs entered with a 3-0 District record. The energy in the gym was electric. After a back and forth game in the early minutes, the Pirates were able to open up the game as they took an early 17-9 lead in the 1Q as the Mustangs struggled to get things going offensively. In the 2Q, the Pirates continued the…

Lytle improved to 23-7 overall and 7-0 overall prior to last night’s road win in Dilley.
“We only have two games left then we are off to the playoffs!” exclaimed Head Coach Lori Wilson prior to tipoff in Dilley. “We played last week with just seven players so we hope to get back to eight sometime this week. The girls have stepped up in every aspect of the game and we have defiantly become a solid team over the last month.”
vs Natalia
Playing a little short-handed, this friendly rivalry went to Lytle for the 8th year in a row as the Lady Pirates knocked down the Lady Mustangs 68-44 in Natalia.
Lytle was led by standout senior Calyssa Sevier who knocked down 30 points, grabbed 10 boards, and claimed one of the MVP Awards for the Rivalry game. Yahdi Lujan took the MVP for…

Arabians still atop District 29-4A after lopsided win

Varsity Arabians #20 Natalie Valle and #12 Oakley Malone prepare for inbound.

Jerel Beaty
Staff Writer
The Arabians had little trouble putting away any thoughts Pleasanton may have had as far as an upset bid against the undefeated District 29-4A leaders. Devine scored in double digits each period while the Eagles never got more than seven in any frame as the Arabians romped 54-19.
Liah Romero, Natalia Valle, and Kylie Monreal each netted double figures going for 14, 12, and 10 respectively. Romero also notched double figures in rebounds with 12.
As one would guess with a 35-point differential, the Arabians led in all major statistical categories as they outshot Pleasanton (48%-18%), scored more points in the paint (42-8), blanked them in transition…

The 8th grade Fillys had little trouble defeating the visiting Pearsall Lady Mavericks as both the A and B teams picked up easy victories. Devine closed its 2023-2024 season Monday against Uvalde.
B-Team
Threes seemed to be the lucky number for the B-Team Fillys as they mauled the Lady Mavericks 33-3, which included shutting out Pearsall the entire second half of play.
“The girls did a fantastic job at both ends of the court, but the way they moved the ball on offense was amazing!” exclaimed Coach Leigh Anne McIver. “We saw a lot of cuts to the basket…

Devine had the opportunity to lift itself further into playoff contention with a victory over Pleasanton last week, their only game of the week due to an odd number of teams in District 29-4A but could not muster a win against the Eagles.
This could be a loss that will come back to haunt the Horses and their playoff hopes as they entered the contest in fourth place in District 29-4A with a record of 2-4. Pleasanton was trailing them with their 1-5 record with the “1” being against Devine in the first round.
The Eagles will now have the outright tiebreaker…
