Deficits overshadow drafting of Devine ISD 2024-2025 budget

Devine is only one of many Texas school districts facing potential budget deficits as school board trustees labor into the summer months developing their 2024-2025 budgets.
“We can only write checks for the amount of money we have in the bucket,” Devine superintendent Todd Grandjean said. “You have to start making tough decisions about personnel and resources.”
The Devine school board met May 14 for the second of three workshops scheduled to decide what should be included in the budget.
With no additional state funding for schools approved by the Texas Legislature in 2023 unofficial estimates project that more than half of the state’s school districts face dipping into money set aside in unassigned fund balance to cover emergencies.
Grandjean said the school board finds itself in much better shape regarding the new budget than anticipated.

Summer Meals at Devine ISD

Devine ISD will be offering free breakfast and lunch on Monday through Thursday beginning on June 1, through June 30, 2024. Meals will be offered dine-in only at our Intermediate cafeteria.
Breakfast will be served from 7:25a.m. – 8:30a.m. and lunch will be from 11:30a.m. – 1:00p.m.to children and teens ages 18 and younger and enrolled students with disabilities up to 21 years old can continue to eat healthy meals at no cost.

Devine school board makes big move on salaries

A starting salary of $54,450 for new teachers joining the Devine school district was approved unanimously by the Devine school board Monday night. Current teachers salaries will be adjusted to this new table as well and can anticipate salary boosts ranging from $3,200 to $6,750, while all other staff members will receive raises equivalent to 5% of their midpoint.
On a motion by Chris Davis, seconded by Ali Buvinghausen, the board approved the starting salary effective during the 2024-2025 school year. That increase includes step increases within the established salary range of $300, $400 and $500.
Shannon Ramirez, district director of finance, thanked the board for taking action.

New mural in town!

This new mural at the old Devine Vol. Fire Station, now occupied by NAPA Auto Parts, is full of Warhorse and Arabian pride. The beauitufl new mural was completed by art students at Devine High School. It is the most recent of many murals around town, which began with the mural painted on the side of Sherry’s Flowers in downtown Devine. Art Club students building Devine’s mural painting tradition pictured above are: Madeline Hein, Ximena Rendon, Adam Moreno, Ian Rendon, Isabella Ramos, Miranda Delgado, Deisy Ramirez, and Jayden George.
