Our beloved Josefina Gonzales Zapata born on March 19, 1926, was called to heaven on Friday, March 15, 2024, at the age of 97. She is proceeded in death by her parents Marcelino & Dolores Gonzales of Natalia, Texas, her late husband of 68 years Santos Zapata Sr, sons Hilario Zapata, Concepcion Zapata, Florencio Zapata, and daughter Maria Zapata Balencia of Natalia Texas.

Family of missing girl MJ Clark just wants to know she is safe
Devine PD is asking for anyone who has information on the whereabouts of 17-year-old Melissa Clark, or “MJ” as her family and friends know her, to please contact authorities.

“The young lady left her home on foot on her own accord this past Thursday, February 29th around 10:48pm, and she has not been seen or heard from since,” stated Lieutenant Chris Andrews.
The official report was filed with Devine PD March 1st.
Her family here in Devine loves her very much, and wants nothing more than to know that she is safe, he added.
“We do not have any reason to believe that she’s being held against her will,” Andrews said. “However it doesn’t appear that she packed or took any of her belongings with her when she left home.”

Devine Garden Club gets ready for butterflies
The Devine Garden Club held their meeting on February 22nd at the home of Meg Lesieur. Hostesses were Meg Lesieur and Margaret Powers. The program, by Margaret Powers, taught the members about growing milkweed. Other butterfly friendly information was given to help us feed our pollinators.

Because He’s 6
My son turned a big 6 years old Sunday, and he sure is proud of it. That night he got a craving for eggs, and he ate one after another until he had devoured 3 eggs, said it was because he was 6 now. If he eats 3 eggs now that he is 6, I hate to see how many eggs we’ll have to cook for breakfast when he’s 16! I have a feeling we are gonna need more chickens if that’s the case.

Mario Diaz and Luke Estrada advanced to the biggest stage of the high school powerlifing world with their outstanding performances in Edinberg at Regional last week. Diaz placed 2nd in the 198lb division while Estrada hit the qualifying total in the 148lb division.
Diaz racked up 1,695 pounds in his division. He squatted 650lb, benched 410lb, and deadlifted 635 to advance to State.
Estrada earned his trip to Abilene with a squat of 505lb, a bench of 290lb, and a deadlift of 540. He totaled 1,335 pounds.
Jaden Araujo gave it his best shot to extend his season but fell just short of his goal as he placed 9th in the 114lb division with a 325lb squat, 165lb bench, and 330lb deadlift to finish with 820 pounds total.
Congratulations to all three lifters on a powerful 2024 season and best of luck to Mario and Luke at State!

Adrian Lopez will represent Natalia at the State Powerlifting Meet in Abilene March 22 in Abilene. Lopez placed 3rd overall in the 123lb weight class at last week’s Regional Meet in Edinberg.
Lopez totaled 1,080 pounds combined with a squat of 375, a bench of 240, and a deadlift of 465lbs.
Oscar Ramos, Luis Buentello, and Eduardo Lopez also gave it their best shot to extend their season one more event but fell just short of their ultimate goal.
Ramos placed 10th in the 114lb division with lifts of 325lb in squat, 170lb on bench, and a 305lb deadlift to total an even 800 pounds.
Buentello placed 5th in the 220lb division, totaling 1,395 pounds. He squatted 585lb, benched 315lb, and deadlifted 495lbs.
Eduardo Lopez bombed out after posting 315lb in squat in the 114lb division.
Congratulations to all four Mustang lifters on a great 2023 season and best of luck to Adrian at State!

Israel Reyes has one more competition to go in 2024 and it is his biggest and most important one yet as he qualified for the State Powerlifting Meet in Abilene at Taylor Country Arena. Reyes placed 4th overall in the 181lb division.
Seth De Leon and Joe Guerrero also qualified for the Regional Meet at JK Northway in Edinberg but were not able to successfully extend their season.
Reyes lifted a total weight of 1,450 pounds that included 600lb in the squat rack, 325lb on bench, and 525lb deadlifting.
Congratulations to all three Warhorses and best of luck to Israel in Abilene!

Are you ready to wear green?
This morning, (Sunday) when I got ready to go to church, I stuck my head out the door to check the thermometer, and went back inside and got a jacket! It was 42º out there and too cool for shirt sleeves. Of course, I had the heater on to go to church and then around noon, when I went to town to run a couple of errands, the air conditioner was on, ho hum…this is Texas. This past week was busy as always…meetings, pokeno, and working at the gift shop.
Two contested races for Devine Council
All three incumbents have re- filed for office as well as two challengers Jeff Miller and Ray Gonzales.
The City of Devine General Election will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at City Hall.
Filing began in January as usual and the deadline to file was Friday, February 16, 2024. The deadline to file a declaration of write-in candidacy is 5 p.m. on the 74th day before election day which is February 20, 2024 (press day).
District 4 – Josh Ritchey (i) is the only candidate for District 4.
District 3 race will be between the incumbent Stacy Pyron and Jeff Miller.
District 1 race will be between the incumbent Rufino Vega and Ray Gonzales.
