VFW holds flag retirement ceremony on Memorial Day

On Monday morning, May 26, Devine VFW Post 3966 held a Memorial Day ceremony to honor soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for America.
Roughly 80 people quietly watched the Flag Retirement Ceremony, where veterans solemnly placed pieces of damaged flags into a fire, the anthem of their respective military branches playing behind them. After placing the pieces in the fire, they stood back and saluted the flag, showing respect for both America and the soldiers who gave their lives to preserve it.
The damaged flags were donated by the members of the community for this yearly event.
During the flag retirement, the symbolism of the flag was read by VFW Junior Vice Commander Gary Saathoff.

Emergency manager calls in Task Force in “HOPS” fire outbreak

Expert warns county burn ban looms

Firefighters contained an outbreak of wildfire stretching across 17 acres north of Hondo Wednesday afternoon, Medina County Emergency Management Coordinator Mark Chadwick reports.
The Texas A&M Forest Service deployed a task force from Uvalde to confront the conflagration officially dubbed the HOPS fire, he said. Meanwhile, the Hondo Volunteer Fire Department was on the scene off Private Road 233 with five personnel, two brush trucks and a fire tender.
The Medina County Sheriff’s Office also responded to provide assistance, Chadwick said.
“I was first on scene and advised MCSO dispatch that we had approximately 30 fires on the property,” Chadwick said. “I immediately…
