Question: What does the Bible say about raising children?
Answer: According to the Bible, children are a gift from God and should therefore be raised to know and serve Him. The Bible says in Psalm 127:3, “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.”
Parents should always thank God for the children He has given them to raise and teach, but they should also remember that their children actually belong to God. He gives children to us, but only on loan, as they are His children first. This is why it is so critical that parents teach their children about God. The Bible says in Ephesians 6:4, “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” This verse tells us we should not exasperate our children when we discipline them by just being angry with them, but instead we should instruct them with the Bible and teach them what the Bible says is right and wrong. Don’t forget parents, you are your children’s primary example for the first few years of their lives, and they will inevitably pick up your habits, whether they’re good or bad. Be a good example for your children by reading the Bible to them when they’re young and reading it with them when they get older. Deuteronomy 6:6-7. Get the Word of God in their lives as much as possible. Pray with them and teach them to talk to God in prayer whenever they need any kind of help. Discipline your children in love but be firm when it is necessary. Proverbs 19:18. Proverbs 29:15. It’s also very important to take your children to a Bible believing and Christ-honoring church where they can fellowship with other kids their age and learn about God outside of the home. Also take advantage of vacation Bible schools and youth groups that teach children about God and the Bible. No parent is perfect, but if you teach your children the Bible and ask God to help you be a good example for them, you’ll be establishing a strong Biblical foundation to last the rest of your child’s lifetime. Proverbs 22:6.
