8th Grade Mustangs face off against Poth

Last Thursday the Mustangs traveled to Poth for what would be their toughest match-up of the season. Poth got the scoring early in the 1st quarter as they hooked up on a 72 yard TD pass to take a 6-0 lead. The defense for both teams played extremely well throughout the first half. The Mustangs defense was able to come up with some big stops in key moments.
In the 2nd quarter, Ethan Emery intercepted a pass at the 10 yard line to stop a threat from the Pirates. Unfortunately, the offense could not put together a drive. The Pirates took over and took the ball to the Mustangs 1 yard line on a 4th and goal. The Mustangs were able to come up with a huge stop as only 10 seconds remained in the 1st half. The Mustangs, trying to run out the clock, got a huge play from Paul Zapata as he made a number of Poth defenders miss on an incredible 96 yard TD run as the 1st half expired. The 2 point conversion was no good as the teams entered halftime tied at 6.
The Pirates were able to score on a 45 yard run with 2:16 in the 3rd to push their lead to 14-6. The 4th quarter proved to be the difference as Poth would continue to move the ball and find the end zone once again with 6:56 in the 4th quarter to take a 22-6 lead. Paul Zapata would do his best to help keep the Mustangs in the game with a 56 yard TD run with 4:06 remaining in the game. He would then complete a pass to Ethan Emery for the 2 point conversion to make the score 22-14. Poth would seal the game with a 45 yard touchdown run with 2:11 remaining in the game to take a 28-14 victory.
The Mustangs fall to 5-1 on the season and will look to bounce back next week vs. Nixon-Smiley.
