8th Grade Mustangs down Dilley

On Thursday the Dilley Pups came to town to take on the 8th Grade Mustangs. The Mustangs were looking to improve to 5-0 on the season but the Pups were not ready to stand down.
After receiving the opening kickoff the Pups worked their way down the field using up the entire 1st quarter.
2nd quarter play would begin with a 4th and long for the Pups. The pass was completed but it was just short of the 1st down.
The Mustangs would take over and did not take long to find the end zone as Simon Garcia took the handoff and raced 84 yards on the 2nd play of the series. The 2 point conversion by Simon Garcia was good as the Mustangs took an 8-0 lead.
The Pups offense would strike back as they marched their way down the field and punched it into the end zone on a 4th and goal from the 1 yard line. The 2 point conversion was good and the game was tied 8-8.
The Mustangs worked their way down the field once again on their next possession before Simon Garcia was able to break off a 43 yard TD run with 4:52 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Paul Zapata was able to score the 2 point conversion and the Mustangs took the lead once again, 16-8.
The Pups were not fazed as they took the ball on the next series and scored on a 13 yard run with :18 remaining in the second quarter. After converting the 2 point try, the teams went into halftime tied at 16.
The Mustangs received the 2nd half kickoff and controlled the ball for over half of the quarter before Paul Zapata was able to score on an 8 yard run with 3:36 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The 2 point try was no good but the Mustangs held on to a 22-16 lead.
The defense came out in the 2nd half and made some great adjustments to pitch a 2nd half shutout. The Pups were able to move the ball but the defense had some big stops on 4th down that would get the ball in the hands of the offense.
The Mustangs offense would not be stopped the entire night as they were able to score again on their next possession with a Simon Garcia 45 yard run. After a Garcia 2 point conversion the Mustangs led 3-16 with :56 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
The defense had their biggest play of the night in the 4th quarter when the Pups went for it on 4th down and the pass was intercepted by Zach Tanner who returned it about 40 yards to put the offense in great position. Elias De Luna was able to get in on the action as he punched it in from 4 yards out for the Mustangs. The 2 point try was good by Paul Zapata. The Mustangs took a 38-16 lead with 4:14 remaining in the ball game.
That would be the final score as the Mustangs improve to 5-0 on the season.
Offense was led by Simon Garcia who ran the ball extremely well and showed some great bursts of speed. The defense was led by a crew of Mustangs as it took everyone to slow down the Pups Slot T running attack. Zach Tanner had a huge interception in the 4th quarter that really allowed the Mustangs to pull away.
The Mustangs will head to Poth, TX next week as they battle the Pirates in what looks to be a great match-up.
