September 22nd was a full day of volleyball for the Maroon 8th grade Maroon Fillys. After watching the Gold Fillys win, the Maroon team took the court against Natalia and won in two sets. It was in the championship game against Pleasanton that the Fillys met their match. The Pleasanton Eagles played just slightly better than the Fillys and the Eagles won in two sets. Despite the loss, the Fillys had some great plays and it was an exciting game to watch. The Maroon Fillys won second place in their home tournament.
“It is tough to explain to a group of young girls that they have never played better but they still lost the game. The improvement we got from playing a game like that is very valuable to our season. We will only get better and better as we move forward,” said Coach Julie Oropeza.
With a win over the Lady Aggies Monday night, the 8th grade Maroon Fillys record now stands at 5-0 and season record 6-4. The Fillys controlled the net and were strong behind the serving line. Avery Cruz had 3 aces in the 10 points she served and Neenah Guerrero served 2 aces in her 8 points. Zoe Gonzales had 7 points on serves and 2 hits.  Korynn Arche and Bailey Oropeza were aggressive on the net, each having 3 kills in 6 hits. Kristina Moralez had 4 assists and 2 hits. The final scores were 25-19 and 25-17.
“I am pleased with the toughness they’ve shown and the ability to stick together and get another win. We will continue to work and improve as the season continues.” – Coach Julie Oropeza
Up next for the Fillys is a trip down to Crystal City on October 8th followed by Hondo at home on October 15th.
