December 17th started the second round of district as the Fillys host the Lady Coyotes from Uvalde. I wanted to set the pace from the opening tip and get out to an early lead. Unfortunately our first 4 possessions resulted in 4 consecutive turnovers which kept the score closer than expected. But the first quarter was over and the Fillys were up. We settled down in the second quarter, limited our mistakes and played happy. Defense turned up the heat and that boosted our confidence as we turned in a 20 point half time lead. I was proud of our efforts in the second half we kept our intensity and played like it was a close game. Ran through some plays and really kept our mind on the game and not the score. We won 50-18/ These girls work hard in practice play hard in games so to have success is a nice reward for their efforts.
Natalie Valle led the Fillys with 18 points. Airyanna (Yaya) Rodriguez and Skylar Blanton both turned hustle plays into 8 points each. Hannah Brummage added to the scoreboard with 6 points. Katie Rios had a couple of steals that lead to 4 points. Maddie Dubose grabbed rebound after rebound and scored 2 points. Anna Cale Harrison turned a Uvalde turnover into a fast break and scored 2 points. Kourtni Geyer and Brooke Dubose played great defense and finished out the scoring with 1 point each.
Next will be an intense game/atmosphere in Crystal City on January 7th!
