Maroon Colts beat Hondo and go 1-2 in tournament
The 8th Grade Colt Maroon boys won 42-35 versus Hondo 8th A on Thursday, January 16th, in the DMS gym. The Colts trailed 11-27 at the half. The colts had cut the lead to 7 by the end of the third still trailing 25-32. The fourth quarter was all Colts as the team rolled to a 17-3 scoring performance in that final frame. It was a great comeback win with all players contributing either on offense or defense. Sammy Guardiola 17, Ethan Santos 12, Brandon Martinez 6, Adrian Beltran 4, Quentin Sanders 2, Josiah Martinez 1. Played but did not score Adrian Gutierrez, Makhi Burford-Zawarieh, Jonathon Weinkam , and Corey Dirck.
On Saturday in the DSAC gym during the Devine Middle School Round Robin Tournament the Colt Maroon boys lost 25-43 versus Pleasanton 8th in their first game. Colts were only down three at half 16-19 but did not execute the offense very well in the third allowing Pleasanton to take a 35 to 19 lead into the final quarter. The team adjusted well in the first half to being without one of our top scorers, Ethan Santos, but some of the player combinations and the addition of a couple of B teamers threw off the balance in the second half. Athletes played hard and Pleasanton, the eventual 3 and 0 champions, was very good. Brandon Martinez 11, Sammy Guardiola 10, Adrian Beltran 2, Victor Scheafer 2. Played but did not score Adrian Gutierrez, Makhi Burford-Zawarieh, Jonathon Weinkam , Quentin Sanders, Josiah Martinez , Jose Morales, Jordan Roberts and Corey Dirck.
The Colts lost 29-31 versus Marion 8th A in their second game of the tournament. Sammy Guardiola 16, Brandon Martinez 8, Corey Dirck 2, Adrian Gutierrez 2, and Adrian Beltran 1. Played but did not score Makhi Burford-Zawarieh, Jonathon Weinkam , Quentin Sanders, Josiah Martinez, Jose Morales, Jordan Roberts and Victor Scheafer.
Colts trailed 4-12 after a very slow start. The second quarter ending 11-22 and the third ending 15 – 28 were not much better with way to many missed free throws and scoring opportunities. The young group kept fighting and the cover came off the basket for a fantastic fourth which saw the Colts outscore the Bulldogs 14-3. The lead had been cut to one with 12 seconds left when the Colts had a very untimely turnover on a play that could have taken the lead late. After Marion missed a free throw with 5 seconds left the Colts got the ball up the left side of the court quickly for a shot at a 3 to win but it fell short. Great effort late from this bunch. Marion finished second in the tournament.
The Colts won 33 – 30 versus Poteet in the middle school tournament. Nice finish to a tiring day. Colts led 12- 8 after 1, 22-16 at the half, 28 -24 through three and 33-30 at games end. The Colts were 1 and 2 on the day finishing third in the tournament. Sammy Guardiola 15, Brandon Martinez 4, Adrian Gutierrez 4, Josiah Martinez 4, Jonathon Weinkam 3, Jose Morales 2, and Adrian Beltran 1. Played but did not score, Makhi Burford-Zawarieh, Quentin Sanders, Corey Dirck, Jordan Roberts and Victor Scheafer.
With a team record of 7-5, the Colts will play in Pearsall tomorrow night, at home against Carrizo Springs on January 30th, and then their last game will be in Poteet February 3rd.
