8th Grade Gold and Maroon Colts dominate Hondo

The 8th grade Maroon and Gold team Colts picked up two decisive victories in Hondo last Thursday. The Gold team coasted to a 61-19 victory while the Maroon team eased their way to a 34-25 win. Tony Saldivar and Brayden Reyes dominated the scoring headlines in the Gold game scoring 20 and 18 points respectively while the Maroon team used a balanced scoring attack with nine of the ten players posting anywhere from two to seven points apiece.
Gold
The Gold was over before it really had a chance to get going. A 14-0 lead after one quarter of play increased to 30-4 at the halftime break. While the Owls managed to score a little more in the third and fourth quarters (8 and 7 points), there was no catching up to Devine who went for 16 in the third and tallied 15 in the final quarter.
As mentioned, Tony Saldivar and Brayden Reyes combined for 38 of the 61 total points put on the board Thursday night. Carson Suhr, Donovan Dixon, and Edwardo Gonzales combined for 18 as each put in six points. Ethan Appling scored four points and Ayden Leal hit a free throw to finish out the 61-point outburst.
Others contributing in the win were Brooks Poppe, Garon Ortiz, Dominquez Baltazar, and Saul Martinez.
Maroon
The Maroon team posted a little narrower victory than the Gold but it was a victory nonetheless. Devine led 5-1 after the first quarter of play but increased lead to 14-7 at the break. The Maroon outscored the Owls 9-8 in the third quarter and 11-10 in the fourth to secure the 34-25 win.
Eli Contreras and Matthew Gomez each scored seven points apiece while Wero Torres chipped in five points. Tyler Pike tallied four points, Ruger Cotẻ had three, and Logan Davis, Jacob Rodriguez, Jaysen Ramirez, and Carter Faubel tossed in two points apiece. Edwin Belor also contributed in the victory.
