Gold Colts Win 2nd in Hondo
The 8th Grade Gold Colts had a busy week, playing four games in five days. Last Thursday they played Carrizo Springs, on Saturday they competed in the Hondo Tournament, and on Monday faced Poteet in their last game before the winter break.
The Gold team won 25 to 6 versus Carrizo Springs on Thursday, December 12th, in Carrizo Springs. Jordan Roberts 11, Roger Gutierrez 6, Jordan Barton 4, Jose Morales 4, Victor Schaefer 2, Trinidad Hernandez 2. Played but did not score Diego Gerlach, Hayden Johnson, and Antonio Gamboa. Due to gym space constraints, the B game was two 12-minute running clock halves. The Colts B were up 16-0 at half. Good team effort with all playing well and showing improvement.
The Gold Colts won 30 to 15 versus Medina Valley on Saturday, December 14th, in Hondo. Schaefer 8, Roberts 7, Barton 5, Gutierrez 4, Hernandez 4, Gamboa 2. Gerlach, Johnson, and Morales filled out the team. Colts led 8-1 after 1, 15-7 at half, 20-7 after 3 and 30-15 final.
The Colts lost 27 to 29 versus Hondo in the second game of the tournament. We blew an eight point lead after three. Roberts 10, Hernandez 6, Gutierrez 5, Schaefer 2, Barton 2, Morales 2. Gerlach, Johnson, and Gamboa also played. Colts trailed 7-10 after 1, were tied 14-14 at half, led 24-16 after 3 and 27-29 final. Turnovers and missed shots doomed this effort in the final frame. Hondo’s kids played very aggressive and we didn’t match that intensity late. This loss allowed for a second place finish in the tournament; over all a decent weekend.
The Colts won 38 to 11 versus Poteet on Monday in Devine. Roberts 12, Hernandez 8, Gomez 5, Gutierrez 4, Barton 4, Gamboa 2, Schaefer 2, Morales 1. Gerlach was a strong defensive player. Solid effort by all the players and a good bounce back from the loss on Saturday.
The Gold Colts’ team record is 6-1 and will play again January 9th in Crystal City.
8th Maroon Colts Win Hondo Tournament

The 8th Garde Maroon Colt lost 33-38 versus Carrizo Springs on Thursday, December 12th, in Carrizo Springs. Scoring for Devine was Ethan Santos 15, Adrian Gutierrez 6, Sammy Guardiola 3, Jonathon Weinkam 3, Makhi Burford-Zawarieh 2, Brandon Martinez 2, Adrian Beltran 1. Played but did not score Corey Dirck, Josiah Martinez, and Quentin Sanders. Colts could not overcome a 5-12 first quarter deficit. They trailed 12-20 at the half and cut it to a six point deficit by the end of the third quarter 24-30 but were unable to pull any closer than 3 points in the final frame to fall 33-38. It was a good learning experience for the team, we took and missed more shots than Carrizo and controlled the ball for most of the game. We missed more than ten free throws over the course of the game. Carrizo played well and made shots.
The Colts beat Medina Valley in their first game of the Hondo tournament 29 to 27 on Saturday. Guardiola 9, Santos 6, Martinez 5, Gutierrez 2, Beltran 2, Sanders 2, Burford-Zawarieh 2, Martinez 1. Also playing was Dirck and Weinkam. Played to a 0-0 tie after 1, were down 11-12 at the half took lead of 20-14 after 3 and held on to win 29-27. The panthers fought back hard and we allowed them to make it close by going a dismal 3 of 7 from the free throw line in the fourth. The win got us into the winner’s bracket and set up a championship match with Bandera.
The Colt A boys won 37 to 27 versus Bandera on Saturday, Dece, ber 14 in Hondo to take first place in the Hondo tournament. Santos 11, Guardiola 10, Gutierrez 6, Martinez 4, Dirck 2, Burford-Zawarieh 2, Weinkam 2. Beltran, Sander and Martinez also played. The Maroon Colts overcame another slow start trailing 5-9 after 1 to be tied 15-15 at the half then took lead 25-21 by end of third and finished Bandera off 37-27 by the end of four. The win secured the first place plaque for this group of hard working young men.
The Maroon Colts beat Poteet 37 to 23 versus Poteet on Monday. Santos 16, Guardiola 10, Gutierrez 4, Beltran 4, Weinkam 3. Played but did not score Sander, Martinez, Dirck and Martinez. Trailing 7-9 after one and 13-14 at half, the Colts took lead in third 31-18 and finished 37-23. Team did a good job of running our different offenses versus Poteet’s zone in the first half but we missed too many shots and did not rebound well. At the half, we decided to run and push the tempo, which allowed for a better flow to the third quarter and resulted in an 18-4 run that then extended the lead. It was nice to see us play two very different styles of basketball. Team is continuing to improve with each game.
