7th grade Colts open season in Hondo

The Devine 7th Grade basketball teams began their hoops careers in Hondo before the Thanksgiving holidays. The Maroon team defeated the Owls 38-13, while the Gold team lost 20-14.
Maroon
Christian Beaver led the way for the 7th grade Maroon team putting up 22 points in the 38-13 victory. Marco Munoz chipped in six points, while Cole Reyes, Carlos Talamantes, Jacob McKee, Rowdy Esparza, and Sergio DeLeon each had two points apiece. Johnny Byrd also contributed to the win.
Devine jumped out to a 13-3 lead after the first six minutes of play and led 26-7 going into halftime. The Colts went further ahead 36-13 going into the final quarter of play.
The Colt defense shut out the Owls in the final frame to cruise to the 25-point season-opening victory.
Gold
The Gold team hung in for a long portion of the ballgame before losing 20-14. The two teams were pretty much neck-and-neck the entire game before Devine was shut out of the scoring column in the third quarter.
Jace Martinez led the Colts in scoring with seven points, while Sawn Lowe chipped in four points. Ricardo DeLeon had two points and Gavin Sanchez made a single free throw. Gage Whitaker, Jack Rumfield, Larry Martinez, Esteban Mendoza, and Andres Hernandez also played for the Colts.
Devine held a slim 6-5 lead after one quarter of play, but the teams went into the halftime locker room tied at 11 points apiece. Hondo got the better of Devine in the third quarter, outshooting the Colts 6-0 to take a commanding 17-11 lead into the final six minutes of the ballgame.
Each team put up three points in the final quarter as Hondo went on for the 20-14 victory.
Up next
The Colts take on the Pearsall Mavericks at home Thursday. Game times are 5pm and 6pm.
