Heroes & Heritage (H&H) will return to Devine, Texas, on Thursday, September 5, 2019, with members of the United States Coast Guard. Angela Salinas, Major General, United States Marine Corps (retired), will be the featured speaker.
The H&H mission is to promote higher education for youth, develop strategic outreach to underserved communities, and conduct community outreach programs that address the issue of equality of opportunity.
The 2019 Student Educational and Leadership Program will be held at the Devine High School. The morning session will be for the middle school students and the afternoon program will be for the high school students.
Angela Salinas is CEO of the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas, a post she has held since July 2015. A native of Alice, Texas, she served 39 years in the Marines and was the first Latina selected and promoted to its general officer ranks.
She is a woman of many firsts: first woman to command the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region, the first woman assigned as an assistant Chief of Staff for plans and policy of a major combatant organization, and the first woman assigned as a ground major’s combat service support monitor.
Salinas’ decorations include the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with gold star, the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars.
The US Coast Guard representatives will highlight career opportunities in the Coast Guard and Federal civilian employment. They will discuss their various occupations and the skills and requirements necessary to become successful candidates and employees. Students will learn about programs and assistance that will help them gain access into the workforce. The student events are planned to stimulate interest and excitement and to encourage the importance of making good choices and self-determination. The information is valuable to students, faculty, and family members in attendance.
H&H is proud to announce that awards from the Governor of Texas will be presented to six educators from the Devine Independent School District.
