Xavier Garza’s summer workouts paid off as he led the Devine Warhorse Cross Country team it its season-opening home invitational last Wednesday morning. Xavier ran a 17:24 to place fourth of 29 runners. The Warhorse team came in fourth overall scoring 65 points. Team champion was Carrizo Springs (33) followed by Harper (52) and Pleasanton (60).
Rylan Mata’s 20:10 placed him 13th while Zachary Alvarez was not too far behind coming in 14th with a time of 20:26. Rounding out the places and finishes for the Warhorses were Chris Ortiz (15th/20:30), Marcus Espinosa (19th/21:27), Michael Reichel (24th/23:24), and Thomas Mendoza (29th/25:11).

For the second consecutive meet and twice in a four-day span, Devine Warhorse Cross Country runner Xavier Garza finished fourth place overall with a time of 17:23 to lead the Warhorse team in the 3-mile race. Chris Ortiz (22nd/19:33) and Matthew Madrid (30th/20:16) were the only other Warhorses to place in the top 30.
Along with Xavier, Chris, and Matthew, Rylan Mata (31st/20:25) and Zachary Alvarez (35/20:49) comprised Devine’s 122 points. Marcus Espinosa (38th/21:23), Michael Reichel (41st/21:55), and Ryan Leal (46th/22:44) rounded out the places and times for the Warhorses.
Lytle won first place as a team with 47 points followed by Hondo (54) and Crystal City (65).
