Red, White, and Boom Independence Day celebration in Hondo July 1

Stay home this Independence Day and celebrate America’s birthday with the City of Hondo. Supported by the Hondo Area Chamber of Commerce, the City is excited to bring Red, White and Boom to the Hondo City Park #1, on Saturday, July 1. Red, White and Boom is an all-day festival providing fun and excitement for the whole family including a BBQ cookoff, live music, a patriotic pet contest, golf tournament, food vendors, arts and craft vendors and of course, a beautiful firework’s display – all without leaving the city.
Come early and witness the presentation of colors presented by the local VFW Post and sing along to the National Anthem. Congressman Will Hurd will give a speech celebrating the birth of our great nation and other speakers including Hondo’s own Mayor Jim Danner will welcome visitors.
The very best in local live music will kick off the day’s events opening with Buddy Vargas at 11:00 am followed by Dalton Lane at 1:00 pm. Singer/songwriter Jamie Lin Wilson (formerly of the Gougers and The Trishas) will take the stage starting at 2:30 pm, followed by Double Bogey at 4:00 pm and the Toman Brothers at 6:00 pm.
The BBQ cookoff, featuring chicken, ribs, brisket and beans will last throughout the day, so be sure to stick around for samplings and to see who takes home the big trophies.
Bring the kids ready to get wet! Two large inflatable water slides will run throughout the day offering a frolicking good time. A rock climbing wall, a bungee trampoline and everyone’s favorite, the Human Claw, will also run throughout the day, ensuring hours of entertainment for kids of all ages (at a nominal fee). The Hondo City Pool will also be open and offering free swim all day.
There’s even an event for your favorite 4-legged friend. Dress your pet in patriotic apparel, enter him in the Patriotic Pet Contest, sponsored by the Hondo Veterinary Clinic, and win prizes for you and your pet. If you’re looking for some sporting action, the Hondo Golf Course will be sponsoring a golf tournament.
No need to rush off to find the perfect picnic lunch as food vendors will be available all day to satisfy your lunchtime needs. Arts and crafts vendors will also be located throughout the park should you have the need to do some shopping.
Pack along your lawn chair and a blanket as Pirate Fireworks, a family owned company providing over 20 years’ experience in providing safe, memorable fireworks displays, will begin their show following the live music at approximately 9:00 pm.
Gates open at 10:30 am and admission is free. For more info and for vendor applications, BBQ Cookoff forms and patriotic pet applications can be picked up at the Hondo Area Chamber of Commerce, 1113 17th St., 830-416-3037.
