New members needed for Devine School Health Advisory Board

The School Health Advisory Board will be seeking new members for the upcoming school year, and provided us with an update on what SHAC has been up to.
The following information was submitted by Britny Stricker, RN, who serves as the Devine ISD Health Services Coordinator at the Devine High School Campus:
“For those wondering what the SHAC or school health advisory council is, every independent school district is required by law to have a school health advisory council (SHAC) of which the majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the school district,” Stricker said. “A SHAC is a group of individuals representing segments of the community and school district, which provides advice to the district on coordinated school health (CSH) programming and its impact on student health and learning. The SHAC provides recommendations to the school board on school health related policies, etc. We also work with the community to ensure optimal health and wellness for our schools and community.”
“Coordinated School Health is a systematic approach of advancing student academic performance by promoting, practicing, and coordinating school health education and services for the benefit and well-being of students in establishing healthy behaviors designed to last a lifetime. This is what the focus of the school health advisory council is. We try to do the best we can to promote health/wellness for our students, staff and community. We have an annual health fair and this year it was held in conjunction with Devine Health and Rehab’s back to school carnival where many school supplies were provided for our DISD students. There were also several health vendors that were able to attend and provided great health information for many different age groups. We are looking forward to next year and hoping to keep our health fair with the back to school carnival. In addition, we hold an annual 5k walk/run and are hoping to do that sometime in the spring as well to promote physical activity within the school and community.”
“At the end of this school year, we will be looking for any new members that are parents or work for a local business in the community that might want to be a part of our School Health Advisory Council. It is a two-year term and we only meet four times a year in October, December, February and May. The meetings will be on a Wednesday from 4:00 PM -5:00 PM, but length of meetings may vary. We hold our meetings at this time because on other days, there are so many events going on and it is hard to do them at any other time. This is a great opportunity to provide ideas and really work on the overall health and wellness of our schools and community. We would love to have the involvement of parents and our community.”
