National Weather Service conducts storm spotter training in Hondo

Medina County currently holds the record for the largest scientifically measured hailstone ever collected by the National Weather Service, said Paul Yura, warning coordination meteorologist for the Austin-San Antonio Weather Forecast Office.
Yura presented a three-dimensional representation of the 6.4 inch diameter hailstone during the annual SKYWARN weather spotter training held March 27 in Hondo. The actual hailstone weighed 1.26 pounds when measured seven days after it fell on April 28, 2021.
“It had been put in a freezer but not in a Ziplock bag,” Yura said. “Ice continues to evaporate, so the original hailstone was even bigger.”
