High speed chase up I-35 N

On Monday, September 29, at approximately 6:17 a.m., a report came in of a possible vehicle overloaded with as many as 10 passengers that had just passed the 86 mile marker northbound on IH-35 in Frio County. Frio County attempted to set up at the 104 mile marker northbound awaiting for the vehicle’s arrival, but quickly saw it speed by.
Catching up at the 108 mile marker on I-35 N, deputies noticed the vehicle had an expired license plate and initiated red and blue emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle around the 116 mile marker.
The report states, “While attempting to make a passenger side approach on the vehicle the white pickup then fled from the traffic stop location onto the East Access Road traveling northbound.”
The Frio County deputy caught up to the vehicle “at about the 119 mile marker on the access road at speeds of 110 mile per hour with clear traffic.”
A spike strip was deployed but unsuccessful.
“The vehicle proceeded northbound on the access road approaching the city limits of Devine, Texas,” the report states.
After the deputy’s vehicle was disabled by the spike strip, another unit continued with the vehicle pursuit and continued pursuing the vehicle northbound on Highway 132. Many different local agencies assisted in the pursuit, which continued into San Antonio. The outcome is unknown, however it is believed that the driver was captured in Bexar County as well as several passengers.

Pirate Band brings home awards, free performance this Friday

By Joshua Chessher-Lytle ISD Director of Bands
The Lytle Pirate Band proudly represented our community at the Hill Country Marching Festival in Fredericksburg on September 27, delivering an outstanding performance that earned them 4th place out of 14 highly competitive 3A bands. Alongside their impressive overall finish, the Pirates brought home 2nd place Drumline, 3rd place Front Ensemble, 4th place Drum Majors, and 5th place Color Guard—showcasing the depth of talent and dedication across the entire program.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that the Lytle Pirate Band held their own against many of the very same programs they faced at the 2024 UIL State Marching Contest, once again proving that Lytle stands among the best in Texas. Their continued growth and excellence highlight the hard work of our student musicians, directors, and families, and we could not be more proud of the way they represent Lytle ISD.
If you haven’t had a chance to see the Pirate Band perform this year, we will be performing this Friday October 3 at Walter Joyce Stadium at 730pm, and admission is FREE! If you’d like to come see us at a Marching Contest, our next Contest is this Saturday, 10/04/25 at Heroes Stadium at 145pm.  The band students would love your support!

Communications failure to blame in mutliple water main breaks for Devine

By Anton Riecher
A communications breakdown between Devine city public works and the construction company handling refurbishing of the city water storage tank near Warhorse Stadium resulted in multiple water main breaks and a weekend boil notice, city officials reported during the Devine City Council special meeting Monday.
Hondo-based MGB Construction failed to notify public works officials that it had closed two key values causing a pressure buildup that weakened and ruptured three 12-inch water mains ruptures at various times, City Public Works director Pete Sanchez told the council.
“We didn’t know anything about it,” Sanchez said.
City Administrator David Jordan read a statement issued by Jourdanton-based 6S Engineering after a meeting with city officials and MGB earlier Monday. The statement notes that the construction plans require that any shutdown of water mains must be coordinated with the city of Devine with notice given at least one week in advance.
“This notification did not occur,” the statement reads. “The city public works staff and 6S Engineering were not aware of the upcoming shutdown until after it had already occurred.”
In other action during the special meeting, the city council approved the proposed tax rate and budget for the fiscal year 2025-2026.
Regarding the water line breaks, Mayor Butch Cook said…LOGIN TO CONTINUE READING at www.devinenewsmembers.com. Community to Honor Veterans with Wreaths Across America Ceremony

Community to Honor Veterans with Wreaths Across America Ceremony
The Current Events Club is once again gearing up to participate in the Wreaths Across America program, a heartfelt initiative to honor the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans. This year, the club invites the community to join in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony for local veterans at Devine Evergreen and St. Joseph Cemeteries.
Remembering Our Heroes
The mission of Wreaths Across America is simple yet powerful: to remember, honor, and teach the next generation about the importance of freedom and the sacrifices made by those who serve in the military. Volunteers across the nation place fresh, balsam wreaths on the graves of veterans during the holiday season, ensuring that each soldier’s sacrifice is never forgotten.
Locally, the ceremony will recognize veterans who have passed and are laid to rest in Devine Evergreen and St. Joseph Cemeteries. The Current Events Club is asking families and community members to check the list of veterans buried in these cemeteries to ensure that all fallen heroes are included in this year’s wreath-laying event.
“We want to make sure that every veteran’s grave is honored,” said club president, Linda Kreinhop. “This list helps us ensure that no one is overlooked, and each individual who served our country is remembered with dignity and respect.”
The Ceremony
The Wreaths Across America Day ceremony will take place on:
Saturday, December 13, 2025
Time: 11:00 am
Location: Devine Evergreen and St. Joseph Cemeteries
The event is open to the public, and everyone is encouraged to attend, whether to participate in placing wreaths, attend the ceremony, or simply take a moment of reflection at the gravesites.
How You Can Help
The Current Events Club also invites community members to sponsor a wreath. Each wreath costs $17, and donations go directly toward the wreath placement. The wreaths are a symbol of respect and gratitude for those who served and are a cherished part of the event.
If you have family members or know of veterans who are buried at either of the cemeteries, please take a moment to review the list of veterans provided by the club. If you notice any names missing, or if you want to ensure a loved one is included in this year’s wreath-laying, please contact Linda Kreinhop at 830-665-6377 or Martha Wall at 210-213-5620.
Why We Do This
“Wreaths Across America is more than just a ceremony; it’s a way for us to teach future generations the importance of remembering those who came before them,” said Kreinhop. “It’s a reminder of the sacrifices made, not just by soldiers, but by their families and communities. This holiday season, let’s come together to honor these heroes.”
Join Us
The Wreaths Across America ceremony provides a meaningful opportunity for reflection and community bonding, and the Current Events Club invites everyone to participate. Mark your calendars and make plans to join us in honoring our nation’s veterans and ensuring their legacy endures.

Pee Wee’s Bike Goes to the Alamo

“Where’s the basement?”
-Pee Wee Herman (at the Alamo)

If you ingested any amount of television during the 1980s, you are probably familiar with Pee Wee Herman. Pee Wee, a comic creation and persona of actor and comedian Paul Reubens, dominated alternative pop culture during the Reagan years. Kind of like a cross between Howdy Doody and the B-52s, Pee Wee Herman brought a strange and surreal space-age retro vibe to America. Pee Wee’s brand of humor was so offbeat and refreshing that we couldn’t help but love him. Recently a news story broke that at first was hard to believe but turned out to be true. It involves a bicycle, and Pee Wee’s distinct connection to Texas and the Alamo.
Besides a hit TV show for kids, and his frequent appearances on late-night television (most often on Late Night with David Letterman), Pee Wee Herman was perhaps best known for the wacky big screen movie hit Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (1985). The story of a boy and his bike, the cinematic action centers around Pee Wee’s vintage 1950s era red and white Schwinn DX cruiser. In movie lingo the bike is what you would call a MacGuffin (an object used as a plot device in movies that the story is centered on). In the movie, Pee Wee’s bike is stolen, and the action tracks his quest to get it back. Various hilarious misadventures follow, and all is wet your pants funny. If you’ve never seen this movie, it is worth watching. Here’s a brief summary…
While shopping, Pee Wee’s bike is stolen. He assumes his hateful neighbor Francis is responsible but can’t prove it. A psychic then tells Pee Wee his bike is in the basement of the Alamo, so his travels begin.
Pee Wee hitchhikes to Texas, riding first with a fugitive convict named Mickey, and then later traveling with trucker Large Marge. At a truck stop, Pee Wee realizes he has lost his wallet, so has to pay for his meal by washing dishes. There he meets Simone, a waitress who dreams of visiting Paris. Pee Wee encourages her to follow her dreams, but as they watch the sun rise from inside a roadside dinosaur statue, Simone’s jealous boyfriend Andy appears. Pee Wee escapes angry Andy by hoping onto a moving train. Finally arriving at the Alamo, Pee Wee learns there is no basement, and his bike is not there.
Despondent, Pee Wee calls Dottie, his only true friend. He then again runs into Andy and is only able to evade him by posing as a rodeo contestant and riding a bucking bull. Pee Wee is thrown from the bull and knocked out as the bull chases Andy from the arena. Pee Wee later visits a biker bar to use the pay phone and is threatened with death after accidently knocking over a line of motorcycles. Pee Wee wins over the bikers however after borrowing a pair of platform shoes from a small statured fry cook and dancing on the tables to the song Tequila. The bikers then give Pee Wee a motorcycle to finish his journey, but he promptly crashes and winds up in the hospital.
While in the hospital, Pee Wee sees his bike on TV being used as a prop at Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank, California. Pee Wee then travels to California, sneaks onto the Warner Brothers lot and grabs his bike. After being chased by security, Pee Wee passes a burning pet shop and stops to rescue the animals inside. Firefighters declare Pee Wee a hero, but the police arrest him anyway. Allowed to keep his bike, the studio president agrees to drop the charges against Pee Wee in exchange for the rights to adapt his story into a film starring James Brolin (as “P.W. Herman”) and Morgan Fairchild as Dottie. The movie ends with Pee Wee and Dottie at a drive-in theater, watching this film. Ultimately, Pee Wee and Dottie depart on their bikes, with Pee Wee claiming that he doesn’t need to watch the movie because he’s already “lived” it. This is one bizarre and fun movie to watch. Fast forward to today…
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, and its ties to Texas, Pee Wee’s red bike (one of several used in the movie and recently acquired at auction for $125,000), is to be put on display at the Alamo. It will serve as a centerpiece of a new visitor center and museum in the Mays Family Gallery, slated to open in the fall of 2027. Until then you can see Pee Wee’s bike at the Ralston Family Collections Center there on the Alamo grounds.
I am glad that Pee Wee’s bike has finally made it to the Alamo…
