Jaime Gomez took opposition to recent comments.

By Anton Riecher
By unanimous vote during an Oct. 10 special meeting the Natalia ISD school board approved action to terminate the contract of Marshall Lee Myers, director of student support services and former high school principal.
No information was disclosed indicating the nature of the allegations leading to Myers’ dismissal. A press release issued by the district Monday read as follows:
“On October 10, 2024, at a properly called special board meeting, the Natalia ISD Board of Trustees voted 7-0 in favor of the Superintendent’s recommendation to propose the termination of district employee Marshall Lee Myers administrator term contract.
“As previously stated, the District is unable to discuss specific personnel matters in public. However, the District can confirm that the third-party, independent investigator’s report was considered by the School Board in closed session and based upon the findings and recommendation of the District Administration, the Board took action.”
The press release also states that a related law enforcement investigation is ongoing.
“The District will continue to handle this matter in accordance with its policy. And the Board is committed to doing what is in the best interest of the District and to ensure a safe working environment for all staff.”
Medina County Sheriff Randy Brown confirmed that…

Permission from state legislators needed for proposed Medina County water storage project

By Anton Riecher
Action by the Texas Legislature will be required to permit drilling to create the massive aquifer storage and recovery project proposed by the newly organized Medina County Regional Water Alliance.
In a presentation during the Oct. 8 meeting of the alliance, Russell Persyn of RESPEC Co. LLC outlined considerations for the ASR project designed to store fresh water in the Trinity aquifer when available to later be recovered during periods of drought.
“ASR is considered an injection well,” Persyn said. “It is considered disposal even though we are putting fresh water down into the ground.”
To reach the Trinity aquifer, injection wells would have to be drilled through the much utilized Edwards aquifer, he said. Texas water code regulations do not permit such disposal unless specific permission is granted by the state legislature.
Persyn presented a…

Miscues prove costly for Natalia

Eric Smith-Staff Writer
First half miscues proved costly for the Natalia Mustangs (1-5, 0-3) vs. Nixon-Smiley (2-4, 1-2)) last Friday night in Gonzales County. The dagger came with one second left on the clock, as Nixon’s Garet Gonzales caught a 30-yard pass over the middle from Eric Rodriguez as time expired to take a 16-0 lead into the half vs. Natalia. This fueled the red and blue Mustangs to a 45-20 win over Natalia.
Natalia did show some positives in the first half prior to that second touchdown including a few good drives. Unfortunately, turnovers continued to hurt the Mustangs as they finished with one fumble and two interceptions on the day.
“Offensively, we did a good job of moving the ball most of the night, we just had some critical errors that stalled out a few drives,” Natalia Head Coach Jason Reynolds said. “We have to do a better job of not turning the ball over.”
In the second half down 16-0, the Natalia Mustangs surrendered..

Comet seen over Devine

Amanda Mares, of Devine, caught this shot of the Atlas Comet visible over Devine Warhorse practice fields around 8 o clock October 14. According to NASA, comets are frozen leftovers from the formation of the solar system composed of dust, rock, and ices. They range from a few miles to tens of miles wide, but as they orbit closer to the Sun, they heat up and spew gases and dust into a glowing head that can be larger than a planet. This material forms a tail that stretches millions of miles.

Details of new Allegiance / ESD4 deal

Jerry Beck was sworn into ESD 4, which is the board overseeing ambulance service in the Devine/Natalia area.

By Anton Riecher
Former Precinct 4 County Commissioner Jerry Beck took the oath of office Oct. 9 to become the newest member of the Medina County Emergency Services District No. 4 Board of Commissioners, the focus of much recent controversy regarding local ambulance service.
Also, ESD4 EMS director Jason Miller provided an update on negotiations with Allegiance Mobile Health to continue providing ambulance service after plans by ESD4 to operate its own ambulance fleet were abandoned in the wake of public opposition.
With only two other board members present, a quorum permitting the meeting to be held was established once Medina County Judge Keith Lutz administered the oath to Beck. Board president Anthony Martin and vice president Viola Potter were the only other board members on hand.
Beck asked if taking the oath meant he would not be allowed to speak as a private citizen during the citizens’ comment portion of the agenda.
“I was going to speak … as a private citizen and address the despicable and underhanded, cowardly manner in which actions by this board were carried out,” he said. “But I said I wouldn’t so I’m not.”
Allegiance Deal
On the Allegiance negotiations, Miller said the Allegiance will continue to provide service throughout the district using ambulances initially acquired by ESD4 to replace the third-party service provided by Allegiances under a contract with two years left subject to annual renewal by the board.
“After the last meeting (the board) voted to extend with Allegiance and work with Allegiance,” Miller said. “Allegiance is going to operate our ambulances.”
In response to questioning by district resident…

Murphy’s Law in full effect in Carrizo

Jerel Beaty
Staff writer
Murphys’s Law was in full effect Friday night in Carrizo Springs as anything that could possibly go wrong for the Warhorses went wrong for the Warhorses in their 34-16 defeat.
Fumbles, penalties, poor tackling, missed blocks, an interception for a pick-six, and flat out inattentiveness to detail haunted Devine throughout the night at the absolute worst possible time as it happened during game one of the District 14-4A DII schedule.
With only five teams in the district, which means only four games total for each team makes it nearly impossible to start the campaign 0-1 and maintain hopes of an outright championship.
Notice, I did say nearly impossible but that is for an outright championship only. Reality shows Devine could win out to finish 3-1, Carrizo Springs finishing at 3-1 losing to Bandera, and Bandera finishing 3-1 with a loss to the Warhorses makes it a three-way tie for the championship.
Seeding then would be based on the point differential, but we will tackle that when or if the time presents itself.
In Carrizo, Devine found itself down 22-0 before reality set in that the Warhorses were in for a ballgame against the Wildcats.
The Horses finally showed some life when Brayden Reyes finally got Devine’s goose egg off Frank Carter Field’s scoreboard with a 19-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 22-8 with 9:22 left in the third quarter.
Most of Warhorse Nation thought that was the spark Devine needed to get their…
