Mustangs take on Harper and Comfort

Varsity Mustang #35 Fabian Ruiz goes up for a shot.

On Tuesday, the Mustangs hosted Harper in a non-district match-up. The Mustangs came out firing on all cylinders and were able to jump out to an early 14-10 lead after the first quarter. It was a back and forth defensive battle all night long with both teams scoring under 40 points. Low scoring quarters in the 2nd and 3rd allowed Harper to take a 26-23 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, both teams exchanged baskets back and forth. With a little over 7 seconds left in the game and tied at 34, Harper went to the free throw line and knocked down 2 free throws to take a 36-34 lead. The Mustangs did not give in, as Juelian Armendariz knocked down a 3 pointer with a little over 1 second left and also drew a foul. With the Mustangs up 1, and a little over 1 second left, a crucial mistake would cost the Mustangs the game. After a missed free throw, there was a foul called on Harper’s 93 foot heave to the other end of the floor. Harper was awarded 3 free throws with no time on the clock and calmly knocked down all 3 to allow Harper to take the victory 39-37.
