Meet Chris Davis: Devine ISD Q&A series

Chris Davis Q&A

  1. What do you believe the role of a school board member is? Why are you interested in serving ?

Role of School board

Set the vision and goals for the district

Adopt policies that give the district direction to set priorities and achieve its goals

Hire and evaluate the superintendent

Adopt and oversee the annual budget

I would like to continue to serve on the school board as I truly care about the students’ overall success and safety. I would also like to continue participating in and contributing to the improvements to the district. I want the CTE programs, as well as all academic offerings continue to develop providing successful career pathways.   As a 6-year board member, I would like to see our school continue to thrive and be able to follow through with the completion of the bond projects the community recently approved.

2. What are your thoughts and ideas to address bullying in schools? And what are your thoughts regarding policies when it comes to students using self- defense?
Bullying in schools is not acceptable. Open communication and conflict resolution techniques as well as character building techniques should be taught to students. Currently, Ciavarra Elementary utilizes a program called Character Strong to help their students develop these important skills.  Every bullying/self-defense incident should be investigated on a case-by-case basis.

3. Are you in favor of or opposed to 4-day school weeks and why?

There are pros and cons of a 4-day school week. In my opinion, a well-developed plan implemented correctly would be beneficial for our students.

4.Please share a little about your previous civic/political/career experience.

I have served the Devine I.S.D as a trustee for the past 6 years.

5. What do you believe are some of the biggest issues facing school districts today?

I have two main concerns for our district. The first one is the limited funds received from the state for unfunded mandates and budgeting.

The second is the difficulty of retaining and attracting educators.

6. The school voucher program expected to be signed in to law by the governor could have a significant impact on school budgets. What is your experience with budgeting?

I have been involved with budgeting with the school district for the past 6 years. I also own/operate a local business where I am in charge of the budget for over 20 years.

8. What ideas do you have for enhancing communication and understanding between teachers and administrators and district policy makers?

I believe communication between teachers, administrators, and policy makers is key. Maintaining open and honest dialog between all staff members allows for the best decisions to be made for our students and our school.
