Mavis Arlene McCulloch, age 85, of Hondo, Texas passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas. Mavis was born January 25, 1934 in Hondo, Texas to Elbert and Virginia Wernette Griffin.
Mavis is preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Virginia Griffin; husband, Billy Ray McCulloch; daughter, Donna Cole; sisters, Geraldine Cunningham, Garnice Brown, and Neva Simmons.
Mavis married Billy McCulloch in 1954 and became a Marine Corps wife. They moved around the country, to South Carolina, Louisiana, California, North Carolina, and finally retired and moved to Boerne, Texas. They started raising birds as a hobby, and raised finches and canaries, where they showed them and won many awards. They then opened their own pet shop in Boerne. After 15 years of owing Red Crest Pet Shop, they decided to retire and moved to Hondo, Texas, where she has lived for the past 16 years.
Mavis is survived by her son, Steven McCulloch; daughter, Pam von Scheele; sister, Mildred Rogers of Austin; grandchildren, Trevor, Trenton, and Taylor von Scheele; great-grandchildren, Jaycee von Scheele and Weston von Scheele.
Graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. Evergreen Cemetery Devine, Texas.
